That's a popular misconception. An f/1.8 lens doesn't put any more light on the AF sensor than an f/2.8 lens. It's not about the light levels, it's about the width of the "rangefinder base". It's like looking at the world through two telescopes - once you have a big enough window to look through both without obstruction, you can't see any better by looking through a bigger window.
