Concert photography
Jul 26, 2012

Hello everyone,

I've got a few questions regarding concert photography. A friend of mine is playing in a Trio at a large venue in Philadelphia and he wants me to take a few pictures.

My equipment includes a 7D, 50mm 1.4, 15-85 and a 28-135. I also have a 430ex but I assume I won't be using flash.

I have no experience taking concert shots and would appreciate any advice.

The club will be dark with changing stage lights and the stage is raised (I may have access to the stage, not sure) appears the audience will be approximately 15 or more feet away from the stage.

Some specific questions; AL Focus or AL Servo? Obviously the drummer will be stationary - little movement from the guitar players. Any thoughts on the maximum ISO or WB settings? I'm thinking 3200 but will consider 6400 if necessary.

I assume I'll have to use spot metering to get the subject exposed properly.

Thanks in advance for the help.
