Re: Re-badge Tamron 100%

I received confirmation from a Sony customer service rep (online live-chat) that the Active Mode of the OSS in the SEL18200 works only when the lens is attached to their VG-10 and VG-20 video cameras. Despite having a BIONZ processor, the NEX cameras' firmware do not support the Active Mode. The "remaining" OSS works at all focal lengths, and it works better than the VR/OSS of the new SEL18200LE. The older SEL18200 was designed specifically as a video lens, and thus has better AF and OIS performance than the new LE model.

The Sony rep denied any knowledge, and would not confirm, that the new LE model is a rebranded Tamron. Thus, they would not confirm nor deny whether the sweep-panorama problem of the Tamron had been corrected with updated firmware, or whether Sony has corrected the problem with Continuous AF and the LCD monitor image (see notes near the bottom of the page at: http://www.tamron.co.jp/en/lineup/b011/specifications/ ).

Without being able to verify that the Tammy's weaknesses have been overcome, it's difficult to justify the LE's $110 greater price over the B011, especially since the Tamron carries a 6 year manufacturer's warranty vs. Sony's 1 year warranty. With currently available information, decisions must be based on cosmetics/appearance, price, and warranty.

Then again - side by side comparison testing might reveal a few lurking factoids that could sway a decision.
