At first: its name is focus-by-wire

I owned a Sony compact and many Olympus lenses with focus-by-wire formerly. I never used them for portraits or action shots in manual focus mode. But I have taken a lot of macro photos, and I absolutely loved this solution. You can adjust the focus by your little finger even on a monster lens.
