A few missing points on lenses

This brand new Canon EOS M camera reminds me a lot of my three year old Olympus EP1:

  • Neither camera has an EVF

  • Neither has a way to attach an optional EVF

  • Neither has a built in flash

  • Both have only two lenses at release

  • Both lenses are kit lenses

  • One lens is a 3X zoom, the other is a 35mm EFL pancake

To be fair Canon at least released a decently spec'd pancake, f2.0 is that bit faster than Olympus' rather pedestrian f2.8 lens, and although the sharpness of the Canon lens is yet to be measured the Olympus lens never tested well.

On the other hand when the E-P1 was released it also had access to several existing Panasonic lenses: A somewhat better quality 14-45mm, a 45-200 telephoto zoom, a 14-140 super zoom and a 7-14 ultrawide.

In theory the EOS-M should benefit from much better EF lens support (due to the onchip PDAF) than the E-P1 got with 4/3rd lenses, but people seem to be saying that the PDAF doesn't work all that well.
