Help sought to do close-up photography with Canon 60D

I appreciate your information, and hope you will take it two further steps.

My ignorance appalls me, but getting this out of the way at the outset lets me ask you to kindly tell me

(1) the practical meaning of my lens' maximum magnification means, and

(2) is there a relationship between minimum focusing distance and the focal length that I select when composing my image?
