Hi Andrew

The reason for server model is that it is the only version Apple will allow you to place another HD - I need two 750gb drives - work is still backed up but with graphics work I am involved with I need images available all the time and the Macmini will be used in 2 locations so cannot carry around external drives as well.

Budget does not allow for SSd drive - been given max £1000 and with that can get Mac mini and External DVD. Will need to purchase extra Ram on my own.

With the big files on the D800, will I still be able to use the Macmini with ease. All it will be is importing files into Aperture, adjustments and selected few will be adjusted in Photoshop. Majority of file sizes will be to output to no bigger then 12 x 8 inches so present camera set up is fine but may get budget for D800 next year. Will also be used for creation of brochures and magazines so DTP files will be big.

However, there will be no extensive multi layering of Photoshop work or video editing but I will need it to drive a 30 inch Dell or maybe a 27 inch later.

Yes it will be good enough. Although when you get a D800, those files are huge!!!

Why get a server version, you dont need it IMO

Just a normal mac mini would do.

I would recommend changing the internal disk to a SSD and if you have USB 3, a good external USB 3 drive would be fast enough.
