Canon EOS-M looks like best *compact* camera for low light
Jul 25, 2012

What is the camera people are always asking for on the forum?
1. dslr-sized sensor
2. compact prime lens
3. #2 is f2.0 or better
4. as cheap as possible

The Canon EOS-M:
1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. $800 - best you can find

Let's look at the competition - the Sony NEX's f2.0 or better lenses are just to big -

The Fujifilm x100
1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. $1,200 - 50% more expensive than the Canon

The Samsung nx210
1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. $1,200 again - $900 for the body + $300 for the f2.0 prime

  • The older nx200 is $600, so with the prime you could do $900

Some people have said that the m43rds with the 3rd generation sensor are as good as the Canon sensor (which has been around a while). Looking at the raw results on dpreview, I cannot entirely disagree, so -

The Panasonic GX1
1. Almost - let's say yes
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. $850 - $500 for a gx1 body-only, $350 for the 20mm f1.7 lens

I'm not sure the Olympus em-5 is small enough to count, but it does have in-body stabilization, so let's look at it -
1. Almost - let's say yes
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. $1,350 - $1,000 for body only, $350 for the 20mm f1.7 lens

The older 2nd gen sensor for m43rds doesn't perform as well at high iso, so I'm not counting cameras that have that in it.

Basically - the Canon EOS-M wins, for what is probably the most common reason to buy a mirrorless camera - dslr-level low light performance in a package that's as compact as possible. The Panasonic gx1 is a very close contender as well.

No one else is as good - not in size, price, and compactness all at once.
