Really excellent E-M5 flash set up...
Jul 24, 2012

Some time back I ordered an Opteka FB-30 Flash Bracket and Opteka, Oly dedicated flash cable thinking I would use it with my E-5. It turned out to be a bit too small, so I parked it in my equipment closet. The FB-30 is a compact, lightweight 'flip' bracket.

Meanwhile I toyed with the idea of selling my Oly FL-36 flash because I was never very thrilled about the slow recycle times relative to my FL-50's -- but I procrastinated, thank goodness.

Today, I broke out the Opteka flash bracket and cable and tried it out on my E-M5 and Oly FL-36 -- Whoa, it's the perfect set up. The bracket is just the right size for the E-M5 with the grip set, and the whole set up is compact and light weight. The only drawback is that the bracket pretty much negates use of the horizontal battery grip, but I'm used to shooting portrait orientation with the vertical grip anyway.

Here's the amazing thing -- I discovered that for some reason, my FL-36 recycles instantly when used with my E-M5 -- and the exposures are spot on! I can't for the life of me figure out why my flash recycles so fast -- even at ISO 200.

Anyway, I thought I would share this discovery for the benefit of anyone who might need to use a flash bracket set up. I've included a couple shots of the set up below.

God Bless,
Greg
