What do you think about the 28-300 zoom? I'll have to read up on those. IMO the do everything lenses seem to always have drawbacks somewhere.

If your primaire goal is to get the butter smooth bokeh you mention in the starting post, then the 28-300 will not get you closer to your goal. Better throw in a little bit more and get a used 70-200mmVRI-2.8 (or 85mm-1.8 if a zoom is not a requirement). That lens will autofocus on your D5000.
