Canon serve up EOS-M cold turkey
Jul 24, 2012

The EOS-M is a bizarre beast in concept and execution. Canon have taken the sensor from the 650D and built it into an enlarged IXUS.

The question is why?

Most IXUS buyers know little and care even less about sensor size. The demand for large sensor compact cameras has primarily come from keen photographers wanting DSLR levels of IQ and control but without the weight and bulk of a DSLR.

Panasonic tried dumbing down the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 into the simplistic point-and-shoot GF-3. The reaction was poor and they immediately realized the error of their ways and released the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 which had al the functionality (and the design) of the original GF-1/2.

So the real action in the compact mirrorless APS-C market is where others, like Panasonic, Sony and Olympus are with fully functioning mirrorless cameras.

Canon delayed getting into the mirrorless market hoping that if they ignored it long enough it would simply go away. Their fears as always revolved around "protecting" their high margin DSLR cameras from cheaper rivals. Now that they've been almost forced into the mirrorless market their response is a basic IXUS with an APS-C.

All the functionality and design cues of the EOS-M scream "listen folks this is not a replacement for a DSLR". It's so basic, and ugly, it is obviously deliberate.

It makes me wonder if Canon have also dumbed down the IQ?

What a missed opportunity. Canon have embraced the mirrorless market wholeheartedly with a true DSLR alternative. They should stop fretting and learn to play the market. Some enthusiast photographers will always prefer the handling of a DSLR, others are now hooked on mirrorless compact photography. There's a reason why the NEX-7 is selling so well.

Instead Canon has delivered a turkey. In trying to "protect" its DSLR range Canon have crash landed into the mirrorless with a flop. It's like watching a latter day dodo trying to fly by leaping off a cliff, and failing.

All in all, very Canon.
