24-70mm Tamron or Nikon opinion?

I need a 24-70mm for my D800 - looking at either the Tamron VC or Nikon. In Australia the Tamron is $1200 and you can get the Nikon for $1600 - so I am not sure the price saving is worth it. If the Tamron was $900 - maybe. Any opinions? Is the VC really important on this focal range? cheers and thanks
