Left AF? How far left?

I read many of these posts on the left AF issue. But how far left? What about the second and third sensor from the far left? If those work well, why bother using the extreme left? Mine is a tad soft to the extreme left, but I don't shoot wide open all the time (especially when focusing with the left AF point through the worst part of the lens). the softness goes away at f/2.8 anyway. I mostly use the center focus and recompose, and for landscape photography, you don't need AF because the landscape does not move.

So what types of photos do you take that require the far left AF point and why is it such a huge issue. I do realize its a $3k camera and its supposed to work, but far left or right AF points are not used in my photography technique. I usually use the center and up to three positions in either left or right of center.
