It would be simple for 3rd party vendors to build a solid mechanical shift converter if the 8 electrical contacts on 2 sides are simply direct wiring. However, knowing Canon, they probably have some electronics in-between (similar to tel-converters), making reversed engineering a bit tricky. Otherwise, how can they justify the price of $200?
BTW, you have a great idea. You should talk to a patent attorney.
