What software was used to "blend" these photos (sample shows)??

I'm helping a friend come up with a website banner photo and he was thinking of taking 3 or 4 photos and "blending them" so they appear to be one composite panorama. Here's a good example at this site (see top of page): http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/

I'm sure this is easy in Photoshop. I own Lightroom and Elements 8, but can't for the life of me figure out a way to do this with those programs.

Anyone have any idea what program was used and if it's something I can purchase?
