Lightroom 4 major glitch?

I backup every time I close Lightroom but I am not sure how that works either.
Do a couple of things you should do to make your life easier with LR.
Generally you keep the catalog on the same drive as the image files.
First, use Edit/Catalog Settings/General to make sure that the catalog is backed up every time Lightroom exits. You will be given the choice of backing it up or not this way. If you have made any changes then back it up. If you haven't made any changes, just looked at some photos then don't bother.
When you exit you have the option of telling LR where to place the catalog backups. Place the catalog backup on a different drive than the drive where the catalog is stored. That way if the drive the catalog is stored on fails you will still have the catalog backup.
I also recommend you have a backup hard drive for your image and catalog files. Two backups is even better. There are several good programs that will update your backup drives. Run it every time you add or work on images.
Every time you backup the catalog a new backup is stored. The space required for these builds up pretty fast. I go to the folder where the backups are stored and delete all but the latest two whenever I do a catalog backup.
