Selecting a printer for high quality black and white prints

I have no experience having a home printing set-up. I have a grip on most of what I've read, but I would be interested and appreciative for advice about selecting a printer where being able to produce high-quality black and white prints is the top priority. Is it necessary, or at least a good idea, to get a printer with multiple black (or grey scale) inks? I'm not especially fussed about maximum output size. I'm interested in making high-quality medium sized prints (13" x 19") at the very largest, and I could live happily enough with something smaller if it would improve the quality to price ratio.
