I am also planning to purchase Dual DVI cables to use with my Nec PA271W monitor.

No. Just pick up a dirt cheap mini-display port to display-port cable, there's no need to go dual-link DVI.

While I agree with the other recommendations, I do not recommend cheap mini display port. I have 2011 macbook pro "non retina" but with the same thunderbolt "which works as mini display port" combined with the same Monitor mentioned by OP "NEC PA271" which include display port.

Simply they DO NOT WORK via cheap cables, you will have hard time to wake up your computer from sleep mode and to boot it while it is connected to the monitor.

The implementation of mini display port to display port manufactured by third parties does not follow the standards of NEC or apple or may be both.

Some people over the internet forums "I have no links" mentioned that MDP to DP dongle combined with the supplied DP cable "with the monitor" will work (NEC PDF document mentioned this as well); however, no brand was mentioned in the pdf, while on the forums it was "Monoprice"

I had truly hard time installing and reinstalling lion thinking that it was OS issue until I changed the cable with the one manufactured by NEC. you can get it from here

or here

Please note that this is my experience with 2011 macbook pro and the same NEC monitor, I think it might be the same with RDMBP.

I forget to mention that I had ZERO issues since I used the original NEC cable.

Sorry for my english

Good luck,
