Nikon 200-400. Need Wimberley?

I had a 400mm F/2.8 and used a Wimberley Side Kick but sold it with the lens. Now getting a 200-400mm f/4 and need to know if it can be used without a Wimberley or other type of support? I use a RRS ball head (H-55) on a Gitzo tripod.
Any suggestions?
