I'd speculate it probably wasn't something to consider when ยต4/3 was conceived and design / operation standards of either brands were formulated and locked in, and there hasn't been enough outcry since, otherwise.

I do wonder if an additional standard for this has to be formally sorted out and agreed upon so there would be no conflicts between branded components.

But mainly, I don't entertain "why didn't they" questions often, as I buy a feature set knowing what it does/doesn't do. When stymied I don't bother to wonder why, instead I concentrate how I can compensate to attain the objective. If a feature is missing that's important, I know it will take a different piece of hardware (complaining or questioning won't change that).
