We had that, back in the 70's and 80's. Look up Tamron Adaptall.

But once we entered the autofocus age, and then the electronicly controlled aperture, where each manufacturer had their own control systems and communication protocols, pretty much made such a ' Universal Translator' adapter near impossible.
