people think masking tools are miracle workers and you don't have to do anything. Far from it, you need to learn how to use the tool to make the most out of it. Watch the tutorial movies of fluid mask 3 or topaz remask and be amazed of what you can do with them...

Also some photoshop thechniques are very efficient of extracting dificult masks.

But, as i said, invest time to learn the tool.
