Honestly your shot looks in focus to me!

If you look at the player's shirt, the text on the half closer to the camera is in sharper focus, and the player's face is soft.

It's only off by an inch or two, but that makes the difference between 16 MP of resolution and 4 MP of resolution or less.

Yea I agree that AF-C focus conformation sucks if you can't override it I have the A550 too so I know what you are talking about! I wish Sony made a 35-100mm F2.8 SSM lens for APS that would be the perfect indoor sports lens. I have the 16-50 SSM and it's so fast even on my old KM 7D but just a little short sometimes.

I do have a Minolta 35-105/3.5-4.5, which was my sports lens before I got the 70-210/4. It focused with remarkable speed, but 105mm was too short for a lot of things, and image quality wide open was rather poor so I couldn't crop aggressively. That lens now almost never gets touched unless I'm shooting action in really close quarters.

A 35-100/2.8 SSM does sound like a good idea, but I doubt Sony will make it, since there's already a 28-75/2.8 and 24-70/2.8 SSM. Perhaps the SIgma 50-150/2.8 could fill that role, but it's discontinued...
