What I'd expect from a magazine :)

Issue 124 of Digital Photographer and the August, 2012 issue of Digital Photo both had head-to-head tests of the 5D3 and the D800. Both magazines chose the 5D Mark III as the winner!

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHER gave the 5D3 9/10 for Ease of Use/Quality of Interface (8/10 for the D800); 9/10 for Special features On Board (8/10 for the D800) and 10/10 for Quality Of The Results (8/10 for the D800) - OVER-ALL SCORE was 9/10 saying that the 5D3 is a "fast and responsive camera that can capture stunning images at realistic file sizes for most readers".

DIGITAL PHOTO gave the 5D3 the Digital Photo Gold Award while the D800 was given the Digital Photo Silver Award. The 5D3 got 5 stars for Features & Build, Performance, and Image Quality while the D800 was given 5 stars for Features & Build then 4 stars for Performance and Image Quality.

I think all that magazine "award" fodder is silly and serves no real purposes than selling magazines. Anyone who thinks about it can gather that a D800 is going to serve one photographer much better than it will serve another, and vice versa.

Action portraits (family running + dog running towards the camera on the beach) I'd choose the 5d3

Bridal shoot (bride sitting on steps or rocky outcrop in her flowing dress) I'd choose the D800 hands down.

Which is the better camera... a 1Dx or a medium format Mamiya with 80mp back?

Depends on a lot of stuff doesn't it?

See what I mean?
