Shooting the D7000 in auto is like driving a Ferrari at 20mph.

The D7000 gives you much of the same control you'd find in a pro body, ie. 2 control wheels, FN-button, AE-L button, top LCD, etc. On a cheaper, less advanced camera you'd have to go through the menu to adjust ISO, for example, where as on a D7000 there's an ISO button and it can also be assigned to one of the control wheels. The D7000 is more geared toward shooters who want manual control, where as the D5100 is a consumer body.

Shooting in auto mode, the only difference you will notice between the D40 and the D7000 is the physical size and the D7000's better IQ and dynamic range.
