Your example illustrates an important point. Internet retailers must carry the burden of higher expense from returned merchandise because customers are being asked to make a purchase without ever seeing or touching it. This is one of the costs of doing business remotely. If the system is working correctly the higher returned merchandise expense, vs B&M, are offset by the larger addressable market. B&M may have lower returned merchandise expense but they are "paying" for that from their overhead.
