The sigma 1.4 is the sharpest lens I have come across--or awfully close. The bokeh on it is up to par with the best. On a full frame the 1.4 aperture is not going to be frequently used as it is incredibly shallow, but the bokeh remains great through smaller apertures. With the Nikon 1.8g the 7 bladed diaphragm shows its weakness past f/4, and if you do want the shallow DOF the 1.8 will not match the Sigma.
I went with the Sigma 1.4, no regrets here. As for QC, I think it is greatly overblown and all of the Sigma EX lenses carry enough warranty.
