Perhaps I have a good copy, but I cannot confirm your observations. My E-Series 28 2.8 is incredibly sharp in the middle and very acceptable everywhere else. The following are with a cheap polarizer, hand held, and a 100% (or so) crop. For a pancake and $100 it is hard to do better. At 28mm it is easy to zone focus, and on the d800 sized body it makes it a great combo if weight is an issue. A bit wide for street shooting though IMO. For DX this is an ideal street lens.
