If you are using software that mostly involves buttons and sliders, a tablet and pen are not of much help.

The pen tablet is most useful when retouching, repairing, dodging and burning, or fine-tuning masks in Photoshop. This is because the pen lets you use pressure to control the quality of your strokes. More expensive tablets also let you control stroke quality with pen angle and rotation. All of those are impossible with a mouse, since a mouse only registers mouse button on/off with no subtlety at all.
