Opening Nikon D800 RAW or NEF files

I just received my Nikon D800 but having problems opening NEF files. I had no problem with my D300. I have both Photoshop Elements 8 and Lightroom. The JPEG file format works fine. TIFF works fine. Is there something unique about the Nikon D800 NEF Files ? The files show up fine on the camera but when I try to open in Photoshop, I get the message "cannot open because it is the wrong type of file". Lightroom states, "could not read the preview".
