Same happened to me, except I could choose to have the old DA16-50 repaired or get a K-5 for free as some sort of compensation.

I am very pleased with the new DA16-50 and it is a lot better than the old one.

I have a very early (first batch) DA*16-50 and it had trouble getting an AF lock. Images where also a little soft. I believe it was optically a little decentered. I just sat it in my photo cabinet and let it gether dust. :-). A few yers later I got a new DA*16-50 and it behaved perfectly and had a very sharp image. Last hear I finally sent the original DA*16-50 in to be service by CRIS. They did replace the SDM, which was still working plus did some optical alignment on the lens. It is now a very good lens.
