D800E long exposure noise
Jul 16, 2012

I shot some long exposure seascape images with D800E and noticed that it brings massive amount of "white pixel" noise. This is when the long exposure NR is turned off in the settings. Here's a 100% crop example of a 149 second exposure.

Turning long exposure NR on in the camera settings solves the problem, but it also doubles the exposure time which is an annoyance. I used to shoot with Canon and never noticed this much LE noise no matter how long the exposure time was.

Is there any good solution to get rid of the LE noise if one keeps the LE NR off in D800E settings? Sharpening clearly makes the LE noise more pronounced. Using 2 % colour NR and turning edge noise NR + Astro NR on in CNX2 reduces the visibility of LE noise, but also blurs the image. How do the astro photographers handle this kind of LE noise?
