I just returned from a 5-week trip with my 5DIII.
My number one lense was the 28-300. It was even superb for video.
What you need to carry, rather than a variety of lenses, is a set up to allow you to view the LCD in bright light when you are taking video.
I also have an extensive collection of Canon L lenses. I do not use them except when conditions demand.
The 28-300 is an amazing lense but heavy.
