For day hikes you could probably ditch a lot of that stuff you are carrying... I use a Lowpro photo sport backpack for all of my day hikes. I can even squeeze enough in for an overnight (hotel) trip.

I have a Deuter 60 L backpack for all of my overnight camping trips, that I will sometimes bring on day trips, although it is pretty big andf bulky.
