Best long exposure night photography approach without cable remote?
Jul 14, 2012

I'm on a trip into a quite dense forest with my EOS 20D and tripod, but I forgot to bring a cable release!

I want to take shots at night, with a 50mm lens, as much depth of field as I can manage. There's such minimal light of any kind (no moonlight) so I need long exposures of a few minutes at least to pick up even simple variations in shadow detail.

I want to shoot at native ISO.

Testing using the bulb setting I find I'm unable to hold the button down for long periods without introducing some shake, even on a sturdy tripod.

Any suggestions? Is taking multiple 30 second exposures and stacking them worthwhile, given that an individual 30s shot perhaps won't even register on the camera sensor?

Any quick suggestions would be greatly appreciated to prevent this being a wasted trip!

Thanks in advance.
