Re: I figured the low power flash

but still would have expected some motion blur from ambient light.

I can see why one would think that!
Also some (but not all) of the light in the background is also from the flash.

The shot was taken with the lens right up against a netting, and that helped steady the lens a bit. Also, one of the other advantages of the fisheye's very short focal length is that it is often possible to hand hold at relatively slow shutter speeds:

This was definitely hand held:
Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G ED AF DX Fisheye
1/8s f/3.2 at 10.5mm iso400 SB-800

Also hand held, but at 1/10s 28mm focal length:
Nikon D3 ,Nikkor 28mm f/1.4D AF ,SB-900 (Incand Gel)
1/10s f/2.5 at 28.0mm iso400

I suspect that all the time that I spent as a youngster target shooting with a .22 translates a bit to holding a camera still!

Good shot though.

Thanks (It was one of the better of a few hundred! Those bats move quite quickly and erratically!).

Best Regards,
