I have been buying Seagate GoFlex drives. They have a replaceable interface module that can be swapped. Costco sells 1.5TB drives for about $120. These come with a USB 2.0/USB 3.0 interface. I have three of these that i use for various purposes.
I have also purchased a FW 800 module which gives me the best performance on my 2009 iMac. I also bought a Thunderbolt interface which gives me the best performance on my MacBook Air.
The bottom line is that I can snap in whichever module gives me the best performance for my particular platform.
