Two points:

1) I think ability to change white balance is a very big advantage - unless you are very very meticulous about setting custom white balance every so often while shooting. Bad colour is probably one of the top 3 reasons for technically bad photos.

2) RAW to JPEG conversion algorithm itself makes a difference. Algorithms can differ on how well they reveal detail, and how they treat noise in High ISO situations etc.

These two situations are the main reason I shoot RAW. Adobe Lightroom does a fantastic job with my cameras (Olympus E-M5 and Nikon D40), so I almost exclusively use RAW.

Back to the sony camera - it seems low ISO JPEGs are good, but not high ISO ones.
