Sorry, I just wanted to add to this. I just tried something.

Final Cut Express only needs to render ProRes or MJPEG files once, then you can move them about and cut them up, it seems, without the need to re-render. So it is perfectly feasible to edit the MJPEG files directly in the timeline.

I shall go do this. Easier than trying to swap an offline set of files for colour grading.
