S2 does not write image to card

I'm hoping some of you experienced S series users can help me with a used S2 I picked up. When you take a picture the image appears on the rear screen but the Access light doesn't go on and the image is not written to the card. I have tried 3 different compact flash cards and no luck. The camera will recognize an unformated card and format it. None of my CF cards say CF II so I don't know if that is the problem. The camera is set to write to a CF not the Smartmedia which I don't have. I have tried different quality settings but no change. I have also replaced all the batteries.
