I have Nikon 18-105mm, 18-200mm, and 16-85mm. If you are not going to jump to FF any time soon, I recommend 16-85mm as it is the sharpest of the three and I find 2 degree at the wide angle more useful than more at the telephoto end. It has better build quality with metal mount and rubber gasket; 18-200mm has a similar build quality with more optical compromises. The IQ on 18-105mm is still pretty good and a used or refurb unit can be had for a good price if budget is an issue. And IQ of 18-105mm is a smidge better than 18-200mm. But that plastic lens mount sure looks skimpy. I gave mine to my son to use with my old D5000. He's been getting pretty good images with that combo.
With 36mp, I find DX lens such as 16-85mm on D800 performs pretty well. D800 sorta functions like a D7000 with a DX lens, still plenty of pixels left over.
