Buy a Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 after already owning 35/50/85 primes and 18-105 zoom?

This is my personal opinion based on my previous experience on 17-55/2.8 Nikkor.

If you don't have those 35/1.8, 50/1.4 and 85/1.8, this 17-55/2.8 would make you very happy for the shallow DOF, with wide zoom range.

HOWEVER...

1) You've those f/1.8 and f/1.4 lens already, they will give you much nicer and shallower DOF. So for DOF, the picture from 17-55/2.8 @ f/2.8, won't surprise.

2) For the zoom range, your 18-105VR provide wider zoom than the 17-55 already. So 17-55 won't surprise you on the zoom range neither.

SO... Something out of the box...

Have u considered buying another body? Like the D3200? Such that you've your 85/1.8 and 18-105 in two bodies ready for shooting.

IMHO, the ideal combo for your need/requirement would be a FX body with 24-70/2.8. This will provide you a reasonable zoom range and narrow DOF.

But don't get me wrong. Before going to FX, I loved my 17-55/2.8! It's super sharp. I'm still regret to trade it for the 24-70. Too bad that I couldn't keep both.

Hope this helps.

Hi all.

I have a little bit of a dilemma. My camera is a D7000 (DX frame).

I own the 35/1.8, 50/1.4, 85/1.8 Nikkor primes and 18-105 f/3.5-5.6 VR zoom.

I love the primes for general artistic/hobby photography and the 18-105 with bounce flash or bright natural light for family snapshots.

However now I have my my kids' birthday parties coming up and I'm thinking I'd like to take snapshots that are a little better photographically, with for instance with shallower DOF and softer natural light without motion blur, while at the same time not have to constantly switch prime lenses or be restricted to 35mm shots (sticking to the longer primes is out of the question in this situation).

My question I suppose is this. If I buy the 17-55 f/2.8, will I be happy? Or is it just going to unnecessarily add to my lens selection drama?

I'd love to hear from people who have been in this situation and would like to know what they did after purchasing the 17-55 2.8.

Thanks
