Advice on Raw conversion and autofocus for A77 + 16-80cz

Hi Folks,
I recently purchased Sony A77 and 16-80mm lens which covers the same range as my R1 (which I loved, but is now too low resolution for stock agencies)
The tiff images I got from the R1 were always really sharp and easy to autofocus so that whole frame was sharp.
I am really struggling to get as sharp an image with the A77 in raw.
1)I'm not entirely certain the best method to get really sharp focus in camera
2)I have never used raw files before, so I am not sure if its always necessary to post process for sharpness etc, and if it is which is the best software to use with the A77, and uk literature that I could buy that would instruct me on how to use it.
I know the lens is rated highly in reevoo (9.8 on image quality), so it must be my lack of skill that's not bringing the best out of the lens.
I am really eager to learn new skills so that I can get the results I want out of the camera.
I suppose its not possible to get top quality images without having to spend time on computer post processing, as I 'd rather be out shooting - but if I need to learn another skill I'd like to do it using really good software and need to understand well the methodology.
Looking forward to your help and advice
Kind Regards
Chris
