Photographing dragonflies in flight

Sometimes bright sun can be the worst light to work with depending on the time of day Obviously, since you were hiking you didn't really have much control over that. Try and make sure your back is always to the sun, that way you won't need flash. Sometimes, though, you do get lucky and they sit still like this guy did for me:
