Keyboard mystery - Windows XP
Jul 12, 2012

I just can't figure this out...

The keyboard works for a while, then it quits. This is cabled keyboard, plugged into a USB port. The only way to get it working again is to unplug it from the USB port, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in. It then works for a while and quits again.

This PC is a few years old, runs XP SP3 with all patches up to date, and continues to be otherwise problem free.

I have tried all the PC's USB ports and I have tried it with three different keyboards, all of which work perfectly on other PCs. Other devices that I tried plugging into the same USB ports (such as a USB-connected external hard drive, Wacom tablet, X-Rite colorimeter, etc.) all work just fine. Thus, it would seem both the ports and the keyboards are all ok, yet I'm still having this problem.

What in the world could evil Windows be doing that's causing this problem?
