Have you ever lost a shot that was good in every way, except there was not quite enough detail in the file?

I have many photos that do not show as much detail as I would prefer. I have none that have noticeable artefacts; and if I did, I could remove them.

Lost detail can't be recovered, while artefacts can be suppressed (automatically and/or manually). This is likely why there is a move toward lighter AA filters and "processing out" artefacts.

You didn't answer the question.

Yes I did. You just didn't like the answer, apparently.

More detail, all other things being equal, is always better than less detail. Everyone 'prefers' more detail.

Not true all the time. But you can easily reduce detail. What you can't do is add in lost detail (although a good facsimile may be adequate in some cases, hence the specialist up-scaling software).

The question was this: have you ever had a shot ruined by lack of detail when everything else was good?

What do you mean by "ruined"? As I stated, lost detail can't be recovered, while artefacts can be suppressed.

Alias artifacts have ruined shots when everything else is good.

If the shot is good aside from artefacts, then you should make the effort to remove the artefacts.

As cameras have progressively more on-board processing power it would not surprise me to see all manufacturers dropping AA filters entirely and moving to artefact suppression in software. This could cause some problems for photographs of unusual materials, but would likely be just as useful -- if not more so -- at suppression of artefacts overall. (Remember that you can get artefacts from any camera with a CFA given the right conditions. Also remember that the demosaicing process can have an enormous impact on false colour artefacts, as I demonstrated here: )
