Replace 10-22 and 24-105 with 17-40 and 70-200?
Jul 11, 2012

I am thinking about replacing my 10-22 and 24-105L with a 17-40L and 70-200 f/4 IS for use with a crop body (recently sold 40D and waiting to find out if Canon will release a mirrorless body). I tend to use the 10-22 in the 17-22 range and find the telephoto end of the 24-105 somewhat disappointing. My reasoning is that the 17-40L may be better for portraits than the 10-22 (at the long end) and will be lighter than the 24-105.

Part of the reason is to reduce weight and improve the telephoto end for portraits and airshows. I previously owned a 300mm f/4L IS which was only used for the annual Eastbourne airshow and was heavy to carry all day.

I would be grateful for any comments on the proposed replacement. A concern is the chromatic aberration performance of the 10-22 compared to the 17-40L. Is the 17-40L any worse in this regard? I accept that wide angle zooms are likely to be more prone to chromatic aberration than standard zooms so I'll need to buy Lightroom and shoot in RAW.

Kind regards,

Canon EOS 40D
