Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens

This lens must be getting on for 9 or 10 years old now?
My question is, does anyone have an idea or heard any whispers about a possible update to this lens and does its old technology mean that it wont be optimised for the newer AF technology on the EOS 5D mk3 for example? (I know - that's 2 questions!)
I'm looking at buying one of these lenses and don't fancy dropping over £2k for something that will be replaced shortly or doesn't maximise the benefits of a new camera.
It will be used on an EOS 1DS II (itself old technology but fantastic IQ) and a 5D III.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
