what file format do 3D images have (jps?)

How do I now produce stereo images to view on a 3D monitor I want to buy soon? I took many side by side shots in holidays...

is it ok, to just save a side by side jpg, right image left, and left image right, rename the .jpg to .jps and view it in a 3D application?
