D5100 without kit lens - 35mm f1.8 instead? Dumb idea?

I'm pretty much certain to get a D5100 (best bang for the buck around here) but would like to consider a non-standard approach to buying glass... instead of the 18-55mm kit lens, I was thinking of getting the 35mm f1.8 as the first lens. Reason being most of the initial shots will be portraits (twins arriving soon!).
Moving forward I was considering getting a more versatile 18-105mm as a travel all-in-one.
Bad idea?
Background:
dSLR newbie; using a bridge camera now. Used an SLR waaay back in the film days.
other than the upcoming new subject matter, will be using this mainly for travel and events.
budget constrained.
TIA!
